About the interview
About the interviewee
Bishop Derrick M. Fitzpatrick has served as pastor of Stone Temple Missionary Baptist Church since 1996. He is the grandson of the church’s founding pastor, Reverend James Marcellus Stone, who licensed and ordained him in 1987.
Alongside Pastor Reshorna Fitzpatrick, he helped expand the church’s community outreach during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing food and essential supplies to neighbors on Chicago’s West Side.
I spoke with Bishop Derrick M. Fitzpatrick at Stone Temple Missionary Baptist Church about growing up in Chicago and the influence of his grandfather, Reverend James Marcellus Stone. We talked about the church’s connection to Martin Luther King Jr. and its work providing food, clothing, and other support in North Lawndale.
I also asked how his understanding of race changed as he moved between schools, college, church, and work.
